Effect of adding yttria on the properties of magnesia refractory

As an important upgraded category of magnesium-carbon-based refractory materials, Rare Earth magnesia-carbon bricks achieve performance optimization by introducing rare earth oxides. In recent years, they have shown significant advantages in extreme working conditions such as steel smelting and non-ferrous metal processing. Its core applications are concentrated in the slag lines and vulnerable parts of high-temperature containers such as converters, electric furnaces, and ladles. During service, they need to withstand high-temperature melt erosion above 1,600°C, chemical erosion of slag, and thermal stress shocks caused by rapid cooling and heating for a long time.

Compared with traditional additives Al and Si, Y2o3 has the characteristics of high melting point, high thermal stability, slag resistance and refined grains, which can meet the key performance requirements of rare earth magnesium carbon materials such as flexural strength, compressive strength and thermal shock resistance. The introduced Y2O3 can react with SiO2 and Al2O3 in the matrix to form rare earth compounds, and act as a binder between grains or fill in the gaps between particles during the sintering process, thereby improving the density of the material and thus improving its mechanical properties.
