A brief discussion on the preparation and application of high-purity europium oxide and metal europium

The main uses of Europium Oxide are as an activator for red phosphors in color TV sets, phosphors for high-pressure mercury lamps, stimulated emission phosphors for new X-ray medical diagnostic systems, etc. The rise of white light LEDs has driven the development of phosphors in systems such as nitrides and sulfides. Europium doping is one of the key factors in improving conversion efficiency and service life. High-purity metallic europium is the basic raw material. Europium hydride undergoes valence and structural changes under high hydrogen pressure, and europium hydride coatings have semiconductor properties and can be used to prepare metal semiconductors. Europium oxide is prepared by extraction method using Rare Earth chloride solution obtained by treating monazite or mixed rare earth ore as raw material, and is extracted by P₂₀₄-kerosene-HCl-ReCl₃ system. Neodymium and samarium are first grouped, and the raffinate is used to extract light rare earths, and samarium and heavy rare earths are extracted into organic phase. Then, medium and heavy rare earths are extracted by 2.0 mol/L HCl to obtain medium rare earth samarium and gadolinium enriched products. After zinc powder reduction and alkalinity method to extract europium, europium oxide is obtained by oxalic acid precipitation, separation, drying and calcination.

High-purity europium oxide is used as raw material and metallic lanthanum is used as reducing agent. The raw materials are placed in a tantalum crucible and loaded into a vacuum tantalum sheet furnace. After the vacuum reaches 10^-3Pa, the temperature is raised to about 1100°C for reduction and distillation. After treatment, high-purity metallic europium is obtained.
